Bookie Kwart, the Educational Coordinator at the Bernard Betel Centre
for Creative Living (BBCCL), contacted Rheta Rosen in the Fall of 1988
asking if she would be interested in doing a program for older adults
in the educational offerings at BBCCL. This presented Rosen with an opportunity
to try out a parent education program to see if indeed the findings of
her earlier research, (that is, that there appreared to be a need for
some eeducational intervention for older parents to enhance their understanding
of the interpersonal interaction in older families), was indeed workable.
Would older adults be interested in such an educational opportunity? Would
they find that this kind of information would be helpful to them in their
relationships with their adult children?
Rosen accepted the offer and
designed and presented a series of three two hour sessions, to a group
of approximately 25 older adults at BBCCL in the fall of 1988. The series
was advertised as “Education for Intergenerational Living: You and
Your Adult Children.” With the able and encouraging assistance of
Kwart at BBCCL, the program was well received by the participants, sustained
their interest, and did appear to respond to some unmet needs, as well
as increase knowledge and understanding of extended family relationships.
In the evaluation of the three sessions, most of the participants indicated
that it had been a very worthwhile learning experience and suggested that
they would have like the course to be longer. They also suggested particular
areas for expanding the course content.
