Background
In the literature on the aging family there has been a growing awareness
of the stresses experienced by the “sandwich generation” usually
daughters (and daughters-in-law) who are caring for both their older parents
and their adult children. Social supports for this group of care-givers
are increasing in many communities throughout North America.
Programs such as “You and Your Aging
Parents” have become popular at social service agencies, community
centres and Y.W.C.A.’s. These programs help the participants deal
with the conflicting demands of providing care to both the older and the
younger generation; provide insights and support to relieve tensions that
emerge’ and suggest new behaviours to help alleviate the stresses
that the middle generation experience in their car-giving roles.
